Ballydawmore 8 was identified as a result of archaeological monitoring of ground works during the construction stage of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy PPP Scheme. Monitoring was carried out in 18 previously untested areas under Excavation Registration Number E004646 and Ministerial Direction A054. The archaeological investigations at Ballydawmore 8 revealed a burnt mound cut by a modern drainage ditch.
The site was located along the limit of the lands made available (LMA) for the purposes of scheme construction, through an area that had previously been afforested. The burnt mound, measuring 10.6m (north-west/south-east) x 5m (east–west) was excavated to a maximum depth of 0.12m. It comprised loosely compacted dark brown-black clayey silt with inclusions of charcoal and broken pebbles. It was truncated on its west and north-west edge by a modern open field drain, C4. The U-shaped drain, 1.4m in width and 1.2m in depth, was recorded for at least 12m within the excavation area although it did not appear to extend beyond the LMA. It ran parallel to a field boundary which was composed of a bank of earth and stone.
No artefacts were retrieved during the excavation. Post-excavation works are ongoing and a final report will be prepared upon completion of all analyses.
