A programme of test trenching was undertaken within a proposed permanent fill area (PFA 7) during the construction phase of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy PPP Scheme. Testing was carried-out under Registration No. E004893 and Ministerial Direction No. A054 in September 2017. A total of 38 test trenches, measuring 3,523 linear meters, were excavated. In all, three archaeological areas (AA) were identified during testing which have been designated as Monroe 6 (AA 1–3).
AA 1, to the south, comprises a spread of charcoal-stained clay, four shallow pits and a possible post-hole. AA 2, on the northern boundary, consists of four possible pits and a disturbed spread of burnt mound material in an area heavily truncated by modern agricultural clearance and drainage. AA 3 to the south-west contains two linear features of potential post-medieval origin. A find of medieval pottery was recovered from cleaning the surface of the wider of the two linear features and subsequently further investigation of the environs of this find spot is proposed. The archaeological features will be excavated under Registration No. E004922.
