Investigations were undertaken to provide subsurface geotechnical information within Flood Cells 1 and 3 of the Athlone Flood Relief Scheme. One borehole (BH RPS 113) was monitored inside Flood Cell 1 on the banks of the former canal. Within Flood Cell 3, the GI involved four boreholes on The Quay on the west bank of the River Shannon, inside the Zone of Archaeological Potential for Athlone town (WM029-042), below Athlone Castle (WM029-042002/WM029-042099) which is a National Monument in State Ownership (No. 520). One of the boreholes (BH RPS 303) was located in the vicinity of the former bridge (WM029-042004). These boreholes were excavated within the existing quays, and there was no impact to upstanding archaeological monuments.
