Ministerial consent (E4421 for OPW managed lands and E4463 for all other lands) was granted by the Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht for enhancement and improvement works to the public amenity area at Fore, Co. Westmeath. Monitoring of ground disturbance associated with the enhancement and improvement works to the public amenity area were undertaken previously on an intermittent basis in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
In June 2017 Westmeath County Council commenced construction of a new footpath between St Feichin’s Roman Catholic Church and St Feichin’s National School on the northern side of the road and pedestrian crossing. The earthen bank on the northern side of the road was removed by machine under archaeological supervision. The bank was approx. 200m in length by 0.5m high. It was a mixture of earth and small stone. The field on the northern side of the road is in pasture. Some of the topsoil from the bank was used to fill a hollow in the field adjacent to the bank.
No archaeological features or artefacts were recorded while monitoring the removal of a roadside bank in Fore by Westmeath County Council in advance of the construction of a footpath and pedestrian crossing.
