The site is located c. 2km east of Athlone town centre and north of the existing Athlone Business and Technology Park. It is a green field site, predominantly under pasture. It is proposed to construct a 293m single carriage road to connect the Business and Technology Park to the R916 which connects with the N6 further north. A geophysical survey (Licence No. 17R0040) and test trenching (License number 17E0266) of the lands to the immediate east of the proposed road was undertaken in June 2017. This revealed numerous indicators of post-medieval agricultural practice and settlement in an area south of WM029-025 Castle/Tower-house.
The area of the proposed link road was test trenched with the excavation of 375m of trench which revealed no archaeological finds or features.
