Four small test trenches were cut in the courtyard of Lismore Castle, to assess the impact of constructing a central planting bed. In three of the trenches compact yard surfaces overlay rubble to at least 0.6m below present ground level. In one trench compact surfaces overlay bedrock and subsoil at 0.35–0.6m below present ground level. The rubble and surfaces appear to be part of the considerable 19th-century works at the castle. Construction of a central garden bed was then monitored, exposing more of the late surfacing and rubble, but nothing earlier in situ.
