A test excavation was undertaken as part of an archaeological impact assessment in advance of the construction of a single dwelling house 300m east of Ballynakill Castle and bawn (TN017009:001-004) in Ballynakill townland, west of Roscrea town. The castle and surrounding area are mentioned in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as the `towne of Ballynakill` and the complex of extant buildings and surrounding lands is classified as a deserted medieval settlement (TN017-009004).
A total of seven test trenches were placed across the footprint of the house and garage, the percolation area and along the driveway to the house. No features or finds of archaeological significance were noted in any of the excavated areas.
