Pre-development testing of selected green field sections of a cable route which will extend from the permitted substation at Milestone wind farm to the existing substation at Cauteen, Co. Tipperary was undertaken. The testing was carried out on 8 and 9 August 2017. A total of 12 test trenches were excavated along the cable route. No archaeological finds, features or deposits were recorded within the majority of trenches excavated. A number of linear features relating to probable 19th/20th-century agricultural practices were noted in some trenches as well as stone land drains. One possible pit of unknown date was uncovered in Trench 6.
Monitoring of all ground works at the construction stage was also undertaken in 2017 under the same licence and a number of archaeological features and sites were uncovered, mainly in areas not subject to previous testing. These are detailed in a separate excavations bulletins entry.
