Archaeological monitoring with metal detection (16D0069) was undertaken at Cragg Graveyard, Ballyard, Newport, Co. Tipperary. The works consisted of the excavation of a foundation trench for a concrete wall which abutted the graveyard wall, and the tidying of a section of the graveyard wall that had collapsed into the adjacent water course, and a small amount of stripping was done along the trackway to the east of the graveyard. During the course of the works, five ex situ architectural fragments were recovered from the graveyard having been used as gravemarkers and gate posts. These were catalogued and it is probable that all fragments originated from the church that once stood at the site. It was agreed that those pieces which were not already secured would be built into the top of the re-built graveyard wall for security. No further archaeological features were revealed during the monitored works.
