A Visual Amenity Impact Assessment in advance of a licence application for test excavation took place from 14-21 July. This was followed by the test excavation on 23 August. The impact assessment identified no adverse impacts associated with the development.
Five test trenches were excavated by mechanical excavator. The excavated soil was metal detected for any metal artefacts. The trenches varied in depth between 0.15m and 0.4m, down to natural subsoil. The subsoil consisted of compact to friable silty clay that varied from yellow grey to orange brown in colour. The overlying statra in Trenches 1, 3 and 5 consisted of topsoil and sod layer throughout. Trenches 2 and 4 retained imported small round limestone and modern building debris as a solidifier to the ground surface and prevention of soft ground during the winter period. All trenches were 2m in width. No archaeology was encountered.
