An application to Tipperary County Council to construct a slatted unit with an underground effluent storage tank in Glenbeha townland 1.75km west of Roscrea town led to a request for an impact assessment to be prepared that would address the archaeological and architectural implications of the new development. The proposed building is located 300m south of the site of Glenbeha Castle (TN017-028). No trace of the original castle survives and the suggested location is within the existing farmyard where there are a number of fine vernacular farm buildings and enclosing walls.
Four test trenches were placed in those areas of the proposed development that were to be subject to maximum ground disturbance. The soil profile in all four trenches consisted of dark brown rich topsoil with occasional small stones and pebbles which overlay brown mottled firm clay with frequent small and medium angular stones. No features of archaeological significance were exposed.
