Test-trenching was carried out on 20 March 2017 to investigate the site of a proposed water treatment plant at Killeenyarda, Holycross, Co. Tipperary as part of the Thurles Regional Water Supply Scheme (Planning Reference No.: 16600877). Testing follows a previous desktop report (Duffy 2016) and geophysical survey (Leigh 2017).
A total of 17 trenches, which measured 562 linear metres, were excavated within the footprint of the proposed treatment plant site targeting geophysical anomalies. No archaeological objects or deposits were identified during testing. The geophysical anomalies appear to represent natural variations in the soils and geology or are related to modern activity. The proposed pipeline leading from the plant site to the River Suir in the west will be subject to test trenching at a later date.
