A programme of archaeological testing was carried out across the area of a site for a proposed single dwelling. The greenfield site is 0.161 hectares and is surrounded by several existing residential dwellings and a small housing development known as ‘The Rock’ to the south-east. The proposed development is within the urban area of Tobercurry town and is located to the east of the town near the golf club.
Archaeological testing was requested for the proposed development due to its proximity to SL038-033 Souterrain which is located c.30m south of the southern boundary of the site. The area proposed for development is located on high ground which forms part of a large rock outcrop. The geological background to the area indicates there are several caves in the vicinity and there is a possibility the nearby souterrain could be a geological feature.
A total of ten test trenches were excavated across the area. A thin covering of topsoil ranging from 0.05-0.3m in thickness was found lying directly on an uneven bedrock surface. No archaeological finds, features or deposits were encountered. No further recommendations were considered necessary.
