Stage (iii) archaeological excavation was carried out at Carrownagark 8 in advance of the N4 Collooney to Castlebaldwin Road Development, Co. Sligo. The site was discovered during Stage (i) archaeological testing and was assessed during Stage (ii) Pre-Excavation Services (Registration Number E4627).
Carrownagark 8 was spread over three fields and recorded the remains of nine shallow burnt mound spreads, three washed-out burnt spreads, one trough with 20 stake-holes at the base, a possible hearth, shallow trough, short gully, linear drainage channel and 16 pits filled with heat-shattered stone in a charcoal-rich matrix. One of the burnt mound spreads contained frequent lithic debitage material and represented a possible lithics working area.
