Stage (iii) archaeological excavation was carried out at Carrownagark 1 in advance of the N4 Collooney to Castlebaldwin Road Development, Co. Sligo. The site was discovered during Stage (i) archaeological testing and was assessed during Stage (ii) Pre-Excavation Services (Registration Number E4627).
The excavation at Carrownagark 1 recorded the remains of a small possible unenclosed prehistoric habitation site in the form of a cluster of seven pits with associated stake-holes, three isolated pit/post-holes and a central hearth feature with associated stake-holes. Two of the pits within the cluster contained sherds of prehistoric pottery while one of the outlying pits contained 13 pieces of flint debitage.
