Stage (iii) archaeological excavation was carried out at Drumfin 3-5 in advance of the N4 Collooney to Castlebaldwin Road Development, Co. Sligo. The site was discovered during Stage (i) archaeological testing and was assessed during Stage (ii) Pre-Excavation Services (Registration Number E4627).
The excavation at Drumfin 3-5 recorded the remains of two adjacent shallow burnt mounds with associated troughs (Drumfin 3 and 4) and a shallow burnt mound with a number of cut features (Drumfin 5).
Four pits were associated with Drumfin 3/4 and a further five pits, two troughs and two gullies were associated with Drumfin 5.
A flint scraper, debitage and a piece of chert debitage were recovered from topsoil. In Drumfin 5 from one of the two troughs on site chert debitage and rhyolite debitage were recovered. A chert flake and flint debitage were also found in two separate pits. A piece of chert debitage was also recovered from the burnt mound in Drumfin 5.
