Stage (iii) archaeological excavation was carried out at Drumfin 1 and 2 in advance of the N4 Collooney to Castlebaldwin Road Development, Co. Sligo. The site was discovered during Stage (i) archaeological testing and was assessed during Stage (ii) Pre-Excavation Services (Registration Number E4627).
The excavation at Drumfin 1 and 2 recorded the remains of three adjacent shallow burnt mounds with associated features (Drumfin 2) and two badly truncated burnt mounds with a number of cut features (Drumfin 1).
Two cut features were associated with two truncated shallow mounds at Drumfin 1. Both pits were shallow and contained fills similar to mound material.
Seven features were associated with Drumfin 2, five pits with one gully and a trough.
The trough was a large oval cut filled with a number of deposits and three degraded timber planks in the base with 34 in-situ stakes present.
Finds on site were restricted to two features. The trough produced two pieces of flint debitage from two separate layers and another pit with a possible overflow gully associated with it produced two pieces of chert debitage.
