Stage (iii) archaeological excavation was carried out at Kingsbrook 1 and 2 in advance of the N4 Collooney to Castlebaldwin Road Development, Co. Sligo. The site was discovered during Stage (i) archaeological testing and was assessed during Stage (ii) Pre-Excavation Services (Registration Number E4627).
The excavation at Kingsbrook 1 and 2 recorded three burnt mounds, associated features and an area of worked wood.
There were 14 pits, one trough and three post-holes associated with Mound A. Two charcoal-production pits, or hearths lay upslope and to the west of the mound.
Eight pits and one post-hole were associated with Mound B. The mound was horseshoe-shaped in plan with the ‘arms’ pointing to the north-east, centred over three pits and one trough. Several charcoal and heat-shattered stone spreads lay around the main horseshoe-shaped mound. Two charcoal-production pits or hearths lay upslope to the west.
Mound C had fewer features associated with it. The mound was horseshoe-shaped in plan, with the arms lying either side of a trough containing some stakes surviving in situ and some parallel elements at the base suggesting this was originally wood lined. The arms also encompassed an ad-hoc wooden platform with discarded wood thrown into the disturbed peat.
