Pre-development testing took place on 28 August and 15 September at a site in Ballyogan townland, 6.5km east-north-east of Enniscrone in County Sligo. The proposed development consisted of the construction of a dwelling house, domestic garage and proprietary effluent treatment system. The testing was a condition of the planning permission and was necessary due to the proximity of a ringfort (SL017-014) to the proposed development. The proposed development was located in a field of pasture with the ringfort located just outside the southern site boundary. A souterrain (SL017-014002) could be traced both within the enclosed area of the rath and immediately north of the enclosing bank.
The testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of seven trenches located to best cover the main elements of the proposed development, especially those closest to the ringfort. The trenches measured 25.3m, 21.5m, 25m, 5.3m, 20.8m, 22.7m and 39.3m long respectively; 1.4-1.7m wide and 0.35-0.65m deep. The stratigraphy encountered was natural and undisturbed, i.e. topsoil above natural subsoils. The topsoil contained one sherd of modern pottery. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
