Four trenches were excavated through the site of a proposed new 12-bed extension to a community nursing unit to the south east of Ballymote Castle, a National Monument. Testing at the site of the proposed development did not result in the discovery of any archaeological material. The stratigraphy examined in the four trial trenches indicated that the area under investigation had been disturbed in the past, most recently with the spreading of up to 0.9m of soil to raise the ground level and previously with disturbance to the underlying grey clayey silt that overlay a compact sticky clay. This latter disturbance yielded a small quantity of animal bone and a number of modern finds, particularly in Trench 1 and the south-eastern ends of Trenches 2 and 3, where the greatest depths of fill were recorded. Natural ground level rose from south-east to north-west within the site. There were no finds of archaeological artefacts recovered during the works.
