An archaeological assessment was requested in advance of a forestry plantation at Glenballythomas Co. Roscommon due to its location within RO021-042 and RO022-057, archaeological complexes which form part of the nationally significant Rathcroghan complex of monuments.
A desktop assessment, site inspection and a lidar survey report were compiled and it was determined there was no evidence for any archaeological sites within the area of proposed plantation. The waterlogged ground conditions meant the area was deemed unsuitable for geophysical survey.
It was concluded a programme of archaeological testing would help determine whether or not there was evidence for subsurface archaeological material at this site. A total of seven test trenches were excavated across the area. Trenches 1 and 2 were located at the southern end of area and both measured 200m in length. Trenches 3 and 4 were located in the central area and measured 220m in length. Trench 5 was located at the northern corner of plot and measured 100m in length. Trenches 6 and 7 were located in the area to the north-east, Trench 6 measured 100m and Trench 7 measured 140m. All trenches were c.1.5m in width.
Stratigraphy was fairly consistent across all trenches, topsoil of mid-brown clay silt to a depth of 0.15-0.2m, which came onto a yellowish very sticky marl. There was occasional evidence for drainage channels cutting across the trenches and occasional patches of tree root activity.
No evidence for any archaeological finds, features or deposits was encountered within any of the trenches. Assessment of physical and visual impact of this plantation on surrounding archaeology concluded impact was minimal.
