Stage (iii) archaeological excavation was carried out at Carroweighter 5 in advance of the N60 Oran Road Realignment Project, Co. Roscommon. The site was discovered during Stage (i) archaeological testing (11E0247) and was assessed during Stage (ii) Pre-Excavation Services.
The excavation at Carroweighter 5 recorded the remains of sixteen pits, four stake-holes, three probable hearths, two post-holes and five furrows. These were largely arranged into a central cluster of fourteen pits and a post-hole as well as a second cluster comprising a hearth, pit, post-hole and stake-hole to the north-east. Three of the stake-holes were grouped at the south-eastern end of the site while the remaining features were scattered across the excavated area. One of the five furrows, which likely dated to the 19th or 20th century, truncated two of the pits in the central cluster. The relationship between the archaeological features is unclear at present however they may represent short-term occupation of the site. Post-excavation analysis of the finds recovered and the environmental remains may assist in dating this site and establishing a relationship between these features and those identified elsewhere in the surrounding landscape.
Post-excavation analyses are ongoing.
