A 15-year planning permission for the development of a wind farm has been granted by Offaly County Council and An Bord Pleanála (Planning Ref.19PA0032). The development will comprise of 29 electricity generating wind turbines and associated services in the townlands of Derryarkin, Derryiron, Coolcor, Coolville, Ballyburly, Greenhills, Bunsallagh, Derrygreenagh, Knockdrin, Wood, Killowen, Corbetstown, Carrick, Garr and Dunville, just north of Rhode in County Offaly. The wind farm will be located near the Yellow River in County Offaly and will stretch over an area measuring 20.58 ha.
Monitoring of geotechnical site investigations was undertaken over a period of eight days from 8 November 2017. The monitoring was undertaken in compliance with a condition of planning. The excavation of 54 trenches was moniotored. Not all of the geotechnical testing was completed in the time scale allocated with the remainder of the works to be undertaken in 2018. The site investigation trenches generally measured 3-5m in length x 1m in width and were excavated to varying depths up to 4m deep.
Nothing of archaeological significance was encountered in any of the areas monitored.
