Monitoring of groundworks at a development on Main Street in Castlebar, County Mayo, took place on 3 April 2017. The development consisted of the renovation and extension of a commercial unit. The monitoring was a condition of planning and was necessary due to the location of the site within the constraint for the historic town of Castlebar (MA078-003). The site was located on the north-west side of Main Street (formerly Market Street). It comprised an 18th- or early 19th-century building fronting onto Main Street, a Protected Structure, with a 20th-century extension to the rear. The extension was demolished as part of the development with the groundworks carried out within the extension. No groundworks were carried out within the Protected Structure.

The area excavated measured 15.8m long and 4.3-4.5m wide and was reduced by 0.3-0.7m. Below the concrete floor slab was rubble fill which contained modern artefacts and services. Below the rubble fill was natural subsoil and bedrock. The base of a mortared rubble wall, which was part of the modern extension, crossed the area which was reduced. Nothing uncovered pre-dated the modern building which was demolished. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
