Test trenching was carried out ahead of the submission of a planning application to construct an energy storage facility at a green field site in the townland of Clare to the east of Claremorris town in Co. Mayo. A monument recorded as a levelled enclosure (MA101-042----) is located within the proposed development site. The site of second levelled enclosure (MA101-089----) is located just to the north.
No archaeological features or artefacts were noted in any of the test trenches excavated on the footprint of the proposed development. Evidence from historic mapping, local information and the results of the archaeological testing indicated that the site erroneously recorded as an enclosure (MA101-042----) appears to have been a sand extraction pit and an associated lime kiln. No evidence of the kiln was identified during testing and this feature may have been removed as a result land improvement works.
