Monitoring of the ground works associated with the construction of an extension to the Community School at John Street, Ardee, took place in February 2017 and revealed that the majority of the ground had been previously disturbed by the construction of the school and its associated car park in the 1970s. Scarping to the north-west and school construction to the south-east left only a 30m wide strip in which it was possible for any archaeological deposits to survive in situ. Monitoring here revealed that in this area the car park had been constructed directly on top of residual topsoil. Removal of this deposit revealed an underlying layer of natural subsoil which in turn sat on the natural stony glacial till. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted here, or elsewhere under the footprint of the proposed development.
