2017:557 - KILMALLOCK: Sarsfield Street, Limerick

Monitoring was carried out of ground works to the rear of Dansko Foods Ltd., Sarsfield Street, Kilmallock. The works comprised the removal of a 3m wide strip of infilled material abutting the upstanding town wall over a length of c. 40m north-east/south-west. Two main layers of infilled material were removed comprising the upper compacted gravel/hardcore yard surface and a substantial underlying layer of orange redeposited clay. A maximum depth of c. 2m of material was removed. This has resulted in the full face of this section of the town wall being exposed and revealed a short projecting course towards the base of the wall. The infilled material was removed to expose a dark brown soil with inclusions of post-medieval material which was preserved in situ.
