Archaeological test excavations were carried out on 17 February 2017, at Ballygallon, Inistioge, Co. Kilkenny, in relation to the proposed construction of a residential development including a separate garage, septic tank and all associated ancillary works.
Due to the presence of recorded monument KK033-001 (Enclosure) within the area of the proposed development site, the National Monuments Service had previously recommended geophysical survey prior to testing. A geophysical survey was conducted by Shanarc Archaeology Ltd. on 3 December 2016 under prospection licence no.16.R0214
Test trenches were situated in the locations where geophysical anomalies had been detected as well as in the footprint of the proposed development.
A total of 6 test trenches were excavated. The trenches measured 1.8m in width, 10-25m in length and 0.2-0.4m in depth. Four of the trenches were aligned roughly north-south across the development site and 2 were aligned east-west.
Stratigraphy was relatively uniform across the site, with a sod and topsoil layer approximately 0.2m in depth, overlying natural. The topsoil was a moderately compact, mid-brown sandy silt with a moderate amount of small-sized angular stones and medium-sized angular stones. The underlying natural layer comprised a moderately compact, mottled light orange/brown silty clay with frequent small- and medium-sized angular stones and occasional large angular stones.
No archaeological finds, features or deposits were found during testing.
