Monitoring of site preparation/foundation trench excavations works associated with the construction of a rear extension to a supermarket premises at Main Street and Keenan’s Lane, Castledermot was undertaken. The work was carried out in compliance with Condition 8 of the Grant of Planning from Kildare County Council (Plan. Ref: 15/495). The development area is located within the Zone of Archaeological Potential established for Castledermot (Ref: KD040-002).
In general, the areas subjected to excavation comprised disturbed layers and fills, up to 1.2m in depth, from which pottery of 17th – 20th centuries was retrieved. A truncated layer of grey/black organic clay soil was uncovered in the south-western area of the site; it was up to 0.4m in depth and sealed by modern fills. Nine sherds of medieval pottery were recovered from this material, indicating that it represented a medieval soil layer. No subsurface features of archaeological interest were uncovered,
