A programme of monitoring was undertaken during the initial phase of groundworks associated with the construction of a new Water Treatment Plant for north Kerry. The development is located at the site of an existing treatment plant in Gortdromakiery townland on the north-west shoreline of Lough Guitane, 7.5km south of Killarney town. The site scheduled for development was overgrown with gorse prior to the construction and its removal revealed extensive areas of exposed bedrock. Topsoil cover in many areas of the site was extremely thin and the underlying subsoil consisted of stony orange/brown sandy clay. A full archaeological presence was maintained during all topsoil removal operations and no features or finds of archaeological merit were uncovered.
