Test excavations were carried out in November 2017 with regard to a planning application to construct a housing development on a 0.45ha site at Woodlawn Road, Ballycasheen, Killarney, Co. Kerry. Five east-west orientated test trenches (T1-T5), extending for a total of c.400m were opened across the site. Trenches were opened with a back-acting track machine using a 1.8m wide flat grading bucket. Remnants of the trackway visible on 2nd and 3rd edition OSI maps were noted in the mid-section of T1. In T4 a possible floor/yard surface, which consisted of five sub-rectangular poor-quality concrete slabs encompassed by loose cobbles was noted. The features represent most probably the remains of a pre-famine vernacular cottage. Nothing of archaeological interest was noted in T2, T3 or T5.
