Monitoring was undertaken in December 2017 on behalf of Irish Water with regard to the construction of a section of the new Burnham East Mains Replacement scheme through the townland of Carhoo East, near Dingle, Co. Kerry. The pipeline trench extends through the zone of notification of a souterrain, KE053-064. A linear trench with an overall length of c.1km was excavated to accommodate the replacement mains water pipe. Trenching was carried out using a small 3-ton excavator equipped with a narrow 0.28m wide toothless bucket. The entire length of the monitored trenching was excavated to an average depth of 1m and a maximum of 1.6m. All the excavated material comprised very loose backfilled material that varied in colour from mid- to dark-brown and greyish-brown in colour with some stone inclusions. Some random larger stones were also noted. Nothing of an archaeological nature was found in the pipeline trench within the zone of notification of the souterrain, KE053-064, or within the wider trench monitoring.
