Test excavations were carried out in October 2017 with regard to a planning application to develop a facility to deposit waste material at a site in Deer Park, Killarney, Co. Kerry. Seven 2m wide parallel test trenches, T1–T7, orientated north-west/south-east, were excavated. Burnt mound material was recorded in the north-west limits of T2 just below the surface at a depth of 0.1m. It consisted of typical fulacht fiadh material comprising heat-shattered angular stones within black charcoal-enriched soil.

Two offset trench extensions, with a combined length of 15m, were opened to establish the limits of the burnt mound material that was determined to be 12m north-east/south-west x 10m. Nothing of archaeological interest was found in the other six test trenches. No archaeological artefacts were recovered during testing. The fulacht was subsequently recorded in the Sites & Monuments Records as KE066-252.
