Pre-development testing was undertaken with regard to a planning application to construct an inert waste facility on a 1.13ha site at Killowen, c. 2km north-east of Kenmare, Co. Kerry. A series of nine 1.8m wide test trenches (T1–T9) extended for a total of c.1000 linear meters were excavated across the footprint of the proposed development. Topsoil comprised entirely of mid-brown peat that survived in depths between a maximum of 0.6m to a minimum of 0.2m. The peat overlay natural material of impermeable grey and yellowish grey clay. Nothing of an archaeological nature was noted within any of the test trenches.
