2017:588 - LEITRIM WEST, Kerry

Test excavation was undertaken with regard to a planning application to construct a dwelling house at Leitrim West, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. A series of five test trenches (T1-T5), extending for a total length of 110m, were excavated. The test trenches were opened with a back-acting track machine using a 1.8m wide flat grading bucket on the footprint of the proposed domestic dwelling house and internal road accessways. The topsoil consisted of blackish-brown peat with an average depth 0.2–0.25m. Several early modern stone-lined drains and terracotta drains were noted during the testing. Nothing of archaeological interest was found.
