An archaeological impact assessment to include a test excavation was requested in advance of a proposed extension to an operational quarry in Caheragh, Castleisland. The subject lands comprise two fields located north-west of the existing quarry which has a high earthen embankment at the northern end to screen and protect an extant ringfort (KEO40-O79). A number of features of possible archaeological significance was revealed during a test excavation carried out in lands to the west of the quarry in 2014. A further test excavation was deemed necessary in 2017 as the application was for lands located in the vicinity of the ringfort to the north of the quarry. In all, eight mechanically excavated trenches were placed in the lands proposed for development. Two were excavated at the northern end of the field previously tested in 2014. Modern cultivation furrows, drainage trenches and former field boundaries were the only features exposed. Test Trenches 3-6 were located in a triangular parcel of land to the south-west of the ringfort and again modern cultivation furrows were the most common features identified. No features of potential archaeological significance were exposed.
