Pre-planning testing of a proposed quarry extension at Ardaneanig, Killarney, Co. Kerry was carried over 4-6 December 2017 at the request of the client and formed part of an EIAR being submitted with the planning application for the site. The site was located largely in pasture with a number of overgrown fields located towards the west and north-west of the site. Machine access was not permitted to the western strip as the fields are located on a notably sharp west-facing slope, the gradient of which was too steep for machine testing. Fifty-one test trenches were excavated across the site and were shallow varying from 0.25m to 0.4m of topsoil overlying an orange gravelly natural with some bands of sand evident in places. No finds, feature or deposits were uncovered in any of the trenches. No potential direct impacts to any upstanding or sub-surface archaeological features or deposits has therefore been identified.
