Monitoring took place, on behalf of The Board of Management, Scoil Niocláis Naofa, of groundworks at the Claddagh, Galway, in November 2017. The project involved the demolition and reconstruction of an existing earth retaining boundary wall at the north-west and a steel palisade fence and associated works at the school.

Monitoring was carried out over a two-week period. The school occupies an elevated site that was infilled in modern times with quarried gravel to provide level ground for the existing pre-fabricated building and school yard.

The infill along the north-western perimeter is approximately 2.3m high and overlooks the adjacent properties on Father Griffin Road. The infill was retained by a deteriorating wall that required replacement. The works involved removing this wall and mechanically excavating a 6m-wide section of fill along 60m of the boundary. Excavation exposed a 1.4m layer of quarried stone overlying a layer of dark brown silty clay of varying depth on natural boulder clay. The silty clay had inclusions of roots and modern debris including plastic, bottles and aluminium. No finds or features of archaeological potential were noted during the excavation work.
