A total of twelve test trenches (aligned south-west/north-east) were excavated across the site. Topsoil consisted of a dark brown, organic (roots), sandy clay, 0.1–0.2m in depth. The underlying subsoil horizon consisted of light brown, stony, sandy clay varying in depth from 0.15–0.6m with occasional sea shells present throughout both these layers. Finally, the natural basal layer is light grey, stony boulder clay with intermittent patches of bright orange/yellow clay. All trenches showed intermittent and irregular plough furrows with no uniform alignment and occasional modern stone-filled drains throughout the site, particularly the easternmost field. No archaeological features or material were identified.
