A programme of monitoring was undertaken during the initial phase of groundworks associated with the construction of a new Waste Water Treatment Plant for Oughterard, Co. Galway. The development is located at the site of an existing treatment plant in Faugh East townland on the north-eastern outskirts of the town on the banks of the Owenriff River. The nearest archaeological monuments to the development are an unclassified castle (GA054-047) and an eighteenth-century barracks (GA054-056). A full archaeological presence was maintained during the removal of topsoil along the route of the new vehicular access to the treatment plant and the topsoil here varied from 0.38m to 0.48m in depth with the underlying subsoil consisting of waterlogged grey marl. Monitoring of topsoil removal at the treatment plant site revealed a soil profile of dark brown clayey silt overlying moderately stony orange/brown sandy clay. No features or finds of archaeological merit were exposed in any of the excavated areas.
