An archaeological evaluation was undertaken prior to the construction of a new 2.1km stretch of road to the south of Enniskillen to link the A509 Derrylin Road with the A4 Dublin Road. The scheme is broadly aligned east-west, and crosses the River Erne to the east, and the Sillees River to the west.
In the western extent of the strip area, a penannular-shaped slot trench was uncovered, with associated post-holes and a possible small hearth. The artefacts discovered consisted of pottery, a small amount of animal bone and teeth, a single lithic, and a small quantity of burnt bone. From the archaeological features and the artefacts discovered, it has been interpreted as the remains of a late Bronze Age structure. Coupling together the physical evidence of the archaeological remains, and the relatively small amount of artefacts discovered, it is concluded that construction of the site was never completed, or that the site was abandoned very quickly. Beyond the construction elements of the structure, the only feature that was related to the actual occupation of the site was a very small hearth. While this hearth did display a small amount of in situ burning, it was certainly not of the size of one that was used with any regularity.
