An archaeological evaluation was carried prior to the proposed construction of a new building for South West College at the site of the former Erne Hospital, Enniskillen. The proposed development site is located within the area of the former Union Workhouse and Fever Hospital and particular consideration was therefore made for potential inhumations to survive subsurface.
A total of 6 test trenches were excavated by mechanical digger fitted with a toothless bucket. The depths of the trenches varied greatly. Subsoil was reached between 0.6m and 2m depth in most trenches. However, subsoil was not reached in Trench 3, which extended over 4m depth. All trenches were excavated through modern fills and/or building debris. The subsoil was predominately a yellowish or orangey sand with some sparse inclusions of small stones.
No archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the evaluation.
