Test trenching was carried out at the site of a proposed development located within the townland of Westpalstown, Oldtown, Co. Dublin. The site was previously stripped of topsoil and ground level reduced a number of years ago under an earlier planning permission, which did not have archaeological conditions attached.

Towards the southern extent of the site on the side of the road the ground has been reduced up to approximately 0.8m below the original ground level, with the remainder of the site previously stripped of topsoil to an average depth of between 0.25m to 0.3m below original ground level. Subsequently the site was developed as a hard standing storage area, surfaced with hardcore stone to an average depth of between 0.2m and 0.25m.

Four test trenches were excavated through this hardcore surface and the natural bounder clay was exposed. No archaeological features or deposits were recorded. The results of the test trenching clearly indicate that the overall site has been previously subject to significant levels of ground reduction.
