This summary details the results of an archaeological assessment in the form of licensed archaeological test trenching carried out under license number (17E0475), at the site of a proposed development located within the townland of Castemount, Tower Road, Castleknock, Dublin 15. (ITM 709095, 735768). It is proposed to construct a single dwelling which involves the partial demolition and restoration of a protected structure, the west gate lodge associated with Castlemount House, which is listed within the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH Reg. 11362046) and is also a protected structure (RPS Ref 753) listed within the Fingal County Council list of protected structures. The site of the proposed development contains no recorded monuments listed within the Record of Monuments and Places (RMP).
Castlemount House is a detached three-bay single-storey over basement house, c.1830, build in the gothic revival style, and its gate appears to be of a similar date and also built in the gothic revival style. The house was constructed by a German family called Koenig. They called it Schlossburg, renamed Castlemount in 1914.
In compliance with the planning condition made by Fingal County Council, two archaeological test trenches were excavated within the site of the proposed development. During this program of test trenching no archaeological features or deposits were recorded. It is recommended that the proposed development be allowed to proceed without any further archaeological mitigation.
