The Clay Farm, Phase 1 development was undertaken in three successive phases, which were archaeologically monitored and then excavated. Phase 1A was monitored between December 2016 and January 2017 and two pits were uncovered; these were subsequently excavated in May 2017. Archaeological monitoring of the Phase 1B lands was carried out between February and September 2017, while a pit uncovered during works was excavated in February 2017. These works were succeeded by the archaeological monitoring of geotechnical pits in August and September 2017, and the monitoring of seventeen trial pits along the route of a proposed bridge in October 2017. Finally, Phase 1C was archaeologically monitored and then excavated between October and November 2017.
The key findings consisted of two pits of uncertain chronology in Phase 1A, a Late Bronze Age pit from Phase 1B, and a kiln, hearth, curvilinear feature, two pits and two spreads from Phase 1C that dated from the early medieval to the post-medieval era. The only artefacts recovered from the investigations comprised two sherds of Late Bronze Age coarse ware, two quartz chunks and a saddle quern fragment, which were all recovered from the Phase 1B pit.
