Monitoring took place on 6–7 June 2017 of engineer’s
test pits at the site of the Parliament Hotel, formerly the Arlington Hotel, Lord Edward Street/Exchange Street Upper/Copper Alley, Dublin 2. Archaeological Impact Assessment reports were prepared for the two sites of no. 18 Exchange Street Upper/Copper Alley and the Parliament Hotel, Lord Edward Street/Copper Alley. These reports were based on a desktop assessment and analysis of previous excavations in the area and related to the sites of this
report. The sites (two buildings) will be joined by an over-ground passageway at first storey level.
The site is in the heart of the medieval Viking area of Dublin City where numerous excavations have attested to the survival of deep archaeological stratigraphy. Archaeological layers were shown to be extensive in the surrounding area and to date from the early Viking period. The levels of these layers were analysed from adjacent sites where information is available, and it was concluded in the AIA reports that archaeological layers were likely to be present in the levels proposed to be reduced in the basement developments in both sites.
During monitoring a brick wall was found at 0.55m below ground level in Trench 1, and a clay pipe stem from Borehole 1 at 0-1m below ground level. Some animal bone was also found at 2m-3m below ground level from the borehole. Otherwise no finds features came to light.
The site was subsequently further tested and excavated by other archaeological companies.
