Testing was undertaken as part of granted planning permission to build a dwelling house in the townland of Flemingstown, Balscadden, Co. Dublin, c. 2.4km to the north-west of Balbriggan. The new house will be located behind an existing house fronting the public road.
The site is located within the confines of a corn-drying kiln (DU001-030). An enclosure (DU001-031), c. 40m to the south-west of the proposed house site, was discovered and subsequently excavated in 2002.
Five trenches were opened on the site of the proposed house: four within an existing lawn and a fifth within a tillage field. It was apparent that previous works for the existing house and gardens had resulted in the substantial alteration of the landscape. One test trench was sited in the same field as the corn-drying kiln whilst the other four openings were sited on the garden to the west. Two features were revealed: one associated with the sewage system for the existing house; whilst a second proved to be the result of animal activity. Nothing was uncovered in the course of testing that could be associated with the recorded monument.
