Monitoring of groundworks associated with the re-development of 27 Carman’s Hall, Dublin 8 was carried out under a reactivation of licence 16E0654. Monitoring was undertaken in response to planning conditions attached to the development (Planning Ref.: 4214/16).

Ground reduction of c. 0.4m was carried out across the entire footprint of the site with deeper excavation of c. 1m below previous ground level in several discrete locations. Mixed demolition layers and post-medieval garden soils were encountered throughout. These deposits contained frequent fragments of red brick, mortar, pan tile and 18th-19th-century ceramic and are likely to represent a demolition event of 18th-century structures visible on Rocque’s mapping of 1756.

A remnant red brick wall, a red brick well and an area of blackened slag-rich soil were identified. Retrieval of ceramic and clay pipe sherds in association with these features allowed these to be dated to the 17th-18th century.

No features or finds of archaeological significance were identified during the course of monitoring works.
