A general clearance of vegetation took place from a large site containing the site of the medieval church of St Peter of the Hill, and the 18th-century Aungier Street Theatre. The site also includes five 18th-century houses that front onto Aungier Street. The clearance was confined to the central area of the site and along the southern side (Longford Street) and consisted of removing buddleia and other vegetation that had rendered the site inaccessible. Previous archaeological testing has identified a band of intact medieval soils that contain a medieval ditch and burials but this area was avoided during the clearance and is protected by a layer of tarmac. The site is to be developed shortly and subsequent investigations and excavations will follow.
