Monitoring in the vicinity of the Brazil motte and bailey (DU011-027) and Knocksedan Bridge (DU011-028--) took place in the first week of December 2017 in showery and bright conditions. The trench ran along the eastern edge of the carriageway running parallel to a gas main that was installed in 2004. The excavation work was carried out using a 13-tonne excavator with a 0.3mm trenching bucket, the average depth of excavation was 1m, reduced to 0.7m on the bridge. Throughout the course of the works the material exposed consisted of tarmac and hardcore (0.4m) overlying modern infill of sand and gravel (0.3-0.4m). No materials, features or finds of archaeological potential were noted during the course of the groundworks.
